History of the name The specific epithet cannabinum, along with the common names of hemp and indium hemp, refer to its similarity to cannabis as a fiber plant, rather than as a source of a psychoactive drug. A North American dog, Apocynum cannabinum, which has erect clusters of greenish-white flowers and a root with laxative and emetic properties. Indian hemp, also called Hemp Dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum species), is a North American plant from the Apocynaceae dog family (order Gentianales). Another name for hemp, especially the Cannabis indica strain, from which several narcotic drugs are obtained.
The provisions of this part of this Act shall apply to coca leaves, to Indian hemp and to resins obtained from Indian hemp and to all preparations on which such resins form the basis. Any hemp or coca leaf from India found on a plantation, whether growing or not, may be seized and destroyed by the owner or manager of that plantation or by any person duly authorized by him.
